Simulation golf is an indoor activity that is easy to start for beginners without clubs, for travellers who would rather not carry more, and for anyone stopping in on the way home from work.
What can be borrowed and what you are expected to wear does vary between venues. Here is what to check before booking, and what to wear to play comfortably.
Rental equipment to check before arriving empty-handed
Start with three items: clubs, gloves and shoes. For clubs, check whether both right- and left-handed sets are available; for gloves and shoes, check that your size is in stock.
Whether rental is free or charged also varies. If the pricing page does not say, ask when you book. Experienced players who want their own clubs should check whether bringing them is allowed.

What to wear
Even at venues without the strict dress code of a golf course, clothes that let your shoulders and hips turn are worth choosing. Wear something easy to move in under a jacket or coat so you can take the outer layer off before you play.
You can play in a skirt or in slim-fitting trousers, but check that a full swing is not restricted. Jewellery and watches can be taken off for the duration if they get in the way.
Should you change your shoes?
Some venues are happy for you to play in trainers or anything else stable and non-slip. If you are arriving in leather shoes or heels, rental shoes will let you swing safely.
On wet days your soles may still be damp, so dry them properly before stepping onto the mat. Where staff give instructions about this, follow them.
Useful extras for beginners
None of this is essential, but a handkerchief or towel makes the evening more comfortable. If your hair is long, a hair tie keeps it out of your eyeline mid-swing.
If you want photos or video, agree with the group when to take them. Leaving a phone in the hitting area is dangerous, so shoot from wherever the venue asks you to.
A checklist before you book
Say that you want to come empty-handed, whether you play right- or left-handed, roughly what shoe size you need, and how many are coming, and check-in will be much quicker. Mentioning that there are beginners in the group helps staff suggest the right booth and the right way to play.
If food and drink are involved, check what the plan includes and what costs extra. Whether you have 60 minutes or two hours also changes how much of a round you can get through.
